November 2009 Capturing the Essence – portrait

February 11th Sport in Action ______________________ (One print and/or one projected image)
This is a chance to use shutter control to either capture the action with a fast shutter speed or add some drama with a slow shutter speed. Try to place yourself so the background does not distract from the subject. In some instances the background (blurred or sharp) can add to the story being told by the photo.
Position yourself for the light. The photo should tell the story.

March 11th In the Garden _______________________ (One print and/or one projected image)
The garden is full of many plants and creatures. It is a great place to apply your creative skills. Try taking your photo from a different perspective to that which one sees when walking through a garden. There are many beautiful tones and shapes to capture. Remember to create flow and balance in your photo.

April 15th Night-time __________________________ (One print and/or one projected image)
One of the most beautiful times happens when the sun has sunk below the horizon. This is a time to have a tripod handy to avoid camera shake (unless you want to be creative). Your ISO setting may need to be adjusted. Balance the light and dark areas of your photo. Also it is a great time to capture movement. Silhouettes can be used to enhance the mood.

May 13th Old Buildings (enlargement) ________________ (One print — enlargement rules)
One does not have to show all of a building to show that it is old. The architecture of a building and its parts all tell the story. Your challenge is to present a well composed photo to give some clues as to the age of the building.

June 10th Abstract Images _____________________ (One print and/or one projected image)
One can capture beautiful abstract images with the camera without resorting to software. Composition and point of view play a big part in creating the image. Control of : shutter speed, zoom lenses, using in camera overlays, and Vaseline on filters are just some of the ways to create an enthralling abstract.

July 8th Natural History ______________________ (One print and/or one projected image)
This photo should show nature without any man-made objects encroaching into the frame. The beauty of nature is all around us. Try to capture it in such a way that the viewer is enchanted in the same way as you are. This can be done using macro, or close up; midrange, telephoto, or the complete scene.
NB Check the competition rules for this competition.

August 12th Seascape/Urbanscape (enlargement) (One print — enlargement rules)
The best time to capture a landscape is from just before daybreak or in the last hour before sunset and a short time after. These times are best because the low level of the sun creates shadows which give depth to your scene. A well composed photo taken at other times can work as well.
Remember to think of the foreground, the middle ground and back ground when composing your photo.

September 9th The Weather ________________________ (One print and/or one projected image)
Your challenge is to capture the mood of the weather. This can be done by composing a photo with the weather in action as it is at that moment. From burning sun, setting sun, rain, hail, sleet snow, fog.
The viewer should feel a strong empathy with the captured moment.

October 14th The Colour Yellow ___________________ (One print and/or one projected image)
Yellow is all around us in many tones and shapes. Take a walk around the town or through a garden looking at anything that is yellow. The essence of the photo may be tones, shapes or both. Be aware that composition will play a great part in this photo.
+ Shot of the Year to be handed in
