Marlborough/Nelson/Motueka Challenge 2018

The day started at 9.30am, a little murky and cool but everyone arrived in great spirits ready for a social fun day.

We commenced with a generous morning tea and after the introduction and instructions regarding the challenge ahead, teams were organised with a mix of clubs.  Six teams each with six people set off for the beach and beyond with instructions to collect images under the topics of : Impressionism; Water; Wildlife; Creative Team Shot; Beach Sculpture.  These were then edited and one of each topic selected ready for presentation to the audience who judged by handclapping.  Team B won and were rewarded with a chocolate bar each.  All good fun and some great creative shots were appreciated.

After a generous lunch, contributed by everyone attending, the serious part of the day commenced, that is the judging of the prints and digitals which were selected the previous month.  This year’s judge, Bruce Fergus, is a local Rarangi resident and wood artist, specialising in the abstract art form. He went on to say it was a privilege and pleasure to judge the images.  He explained his judging philosophy as moments, either a moment in life that the photography has captured, or a moment that the photographer has created.  He went on to say he judged each image on its own merits and critiqued for Composition, Communication, Creativity and Technical.  All 36 images were assessed at least twice, and he stressed the standard of imagaes was very high with very little separating the winning images.  On the day he went through each image and said why he judged each as he did.

The overall winners were:

Best Print - The Alchemists Apprentice - Kim Falconer (Motueka)

Best Digital Image - Got His Thinking Cap On - Lisa Trusler (Nelson)

Best Club Overall - Nelson

Marlborough Camera Club out of the money this year but a good incentive to try harder for next year.  Nelson will be hosting this event in 2019 and details will be forwarded in due course.
